UIOnline-Unemployment Insurance 2023

What is UIOnline

Unemployment insurance (UIOnline) is a federal and joint-state program that provides cash benefits to eligible workers. Each state administers a separate UI program, but all states follow the exact same guidelines established by federal law.
Unemployment insurance payments (benefits) are determined to provide temporary financial assistance to unemployed workers who lost their job because of no fault. Every state sets its own additional requirements for eligibility, benefits amounts, and the period for which benefits can be paid.

Generally, benefits are based on a percentage of your earnings over the last 52 weeks and each state
sets the maximum amount. Benefits are subject to and reportable to federal and most state income taxes on your income tax return. You can choose to have tax deducted from your payment.

Eligibility Criteria

Each state sets its own rules for eligibility for UIOnline benefits, but you usually qualify if:

  • You lost your job for no mistakes of your own. In most states, you must have separation from your last job due to a lack of available work.
  • Meet job and salary requirements. You must meet the requirements of your state for earned wages or the time worked during a specified period of time referred to as the “base period”. (This is the common case in most states usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to when your claim arose filed.)
  • Meet all other state requirements. Find details about your own state program using a Search engine for unemployment insurance services.

How to Apply for UIOnline

To receive UI benefits, you must file with the UI program in the state where you worked.

  • After losing your job, you should contact your state’s UI program as soon as possible. Find your state program using our unemployment insurance services search engine and check with them to see if you should file a claim in person, by phone, or online.
  • In general, you should file your claim with the state where you worked. If you worked in another state than where you now live, or if you have worked in multiple states, the state UI agency where you now live may provide information on how to claim in other states.
  • When you file a claim for UIOnline, you will be asked for certain information such as addresses and dates of former employment. To ensure your claim is not delayed, please provide complete and correct information.
  • It usually takes two to three weeks after you apply to receive your first benefit check. Some states require a one-week waiting period; in other words, you will receive your first payment for the second week of your unemployment claim.
